Hair Gets In Your Eyes: Sheepdog Cake

Gad I love this guy's face. I just want to cuddle him and pet him and feed him multi-colored milk bones and be his dog mom forever more. Sadly, he's going to be feeding himself to a bunch of super cute kids. Yes, Shyloh's 4th birthday cake - and to top it off, this sheepdog cake has pastel pink and green cake layers! What! This was a fun order, a remake of an older cake I designed - the very sheepdog cake that was featured on Bon Appetit a few years ago - yeah, sweet!

Thanks for the fun order, Genieve!

Question - what type of dog would you like to see in cake form, Coco Cake Land style? I've got a plan to make more of these puppies! (ha)...

Dog Cakes!

Dog cakes! So many pups to model in buttercream and so little time. If you've been following my blog for a while you might know I'm wild about make dog cakes. Something about those ridiculously cute little FACES that look so cartoonish and cute in buttercream or fondant!

Maybe I've got dogs on the brain right now because my little Teddy loves dogs! We call them "woh-woh" (which I thought was just a made-up Chinese word my parents used) but it's mea

nt to emulate "woof woof." We're even throwing Teddy a mild dog-themed 1st birthday party! So stay tuned for more doggy-ness on this here blog... !

Dog daze! Which Coco Cake Land dog cake is your fave??

Hairy Pup Birthday Cake!

A lovely hairy frosted vanilla buttercream pup cake made for my old high school friend Sandeep's awesome mom's birthday! I've had the pleasure of making cakes for his wedding day, and many other birthdays since... so nice to catch up with him every once in a while through the cake biz.

And... it's hard to believe but next year it will be our TWENTY YEAR HIGH SCHOOL REUNION. Yep, that's right... I'm no spring chicken! And I'm feeling the age HARD today because I went to "boot camp" fitness class yesterday with my pal Helen and am paying the pain price now! Been trying to ease back into a fitness routine, but maybe doing a super hard class for my first fitness class since having a kid wasn't the coolest idea ever. Oops.

But seriously, twenty years almost since I'ved graduated high school?? That's nuts. Time keeps rolling by like nobody's business. All one really do is try and enjoy every day and plan for some fun things to do in the future, too. When you're young you never imagine that you'll ever be 20, 30, 40 years old... but then BAMMM it kind of happens! I remember my dear friend Tara showing me this list of "rules for living" probably a decade ago... and I came across it again recently and it felt pertinent. So... Here it is! Don't kill me for being a nerd!!

Happy New Year - My Dad's Birthday Cake and Well Wishes for 2013!

My dear dad celebrated his 69th birthday on December 17th... and it has become customary for me to make a DOG CAKE for him every year! Words could never describe how much my dad means to me, and how much his love and support of me has meant, especially over this past year. Dad, you are always there for my sisters and I, and now our children, too. You are such a kind, generous, amazing and hilarious dad. We love you lots!! And here is GLS with a very excellent perm and tuxedo at his brother Randy's wedding in 1975 (pictured with his mom and his own dad, in the background!)

The world is nothing to me without my family, and I am the luckiest person to have such an amazing family. And now I have a little one, too - my baby Teddy! How sweetly his little cousins love him and care for him already, it melts my heart. It's amazing how much love a little baby can bring, and how having Teddy in my life has given me the strength to be myself again. My heart is bursting.

Happy happy new year everyone! Let's ring in the sparkly, wintry bright arrival of 2013, and look positively towards the future and all of the amazing things it can bring!

Lots o' love from cake land and see you in 2013!

Petunia the Pup cake

Petunia the pup cake is a cake I did a while back but hadn't had a chance to post! Karen wanted a very special birthday cake for her little Lucia's 1st birthday - and Lucia adores their puppy Petunia... ! Animal face cakes are clearly one of my favourite types of cakes to make for people. I love how much people love their pets... I feel that hard, as I have had many wonderful pets I have known and loved. Bailey the boxer, Woody the boxer, Coco my beloved kitty that took me through the ages of 19 to 30 (I miss her still!), Taco the fatcat... I hope to get a dog or a cat for my little son Teddy one day! Um, yeah, years from now. Let's just get through the sleepless nights first... :)

Petunia the pup was a dark chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling and chocolate buttercream!
And yes I did Petunia's pencil sketch on the back of an envelope.

Thanks Karen for the fun order - happy birthday Lucia!

Bow Wow Wow Yippee Yo Yippee Yay - Bulldog Cake

Hello, Hunter the dog! How cute is this little bulldog named Hunter?? Elaine, who currently resides in the Yukon, wanted to surprise one of her best pals Veronika here in Vancouver with a very special Coco Cake... in the likeness of her beloved bulldog, Hunter the pup! Secret arrangements were made, pictures of Hunter were sent to me, and a little doggy cake was created. The cake was a dark chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and chocolate ganache filling... Veronika, the birthday girl, is also the proprietor of the very lovely and clothes-covet-able Vancouver shop Lark!

Elaine is so awesome too as she has also been giving me running tips via email, helping me towards my goal of completing my first half-marathon (13.1 miles) here in Vancouver, in May! Hooray! Thanks for the great order Elaine, and for all the running advice!

til next time Coco Cake Land,
